Researcher for indoor location tracking using (unmodulated) Visible Light (published 8-10-2021)

The "WAVES" research group is the expertise center of the Department of Information Technology of Ghent University/IMEC in Belgium for physical-layer research of advanced wireless networks and localization technologies.

Function description

Indoor positioning and tracking systems have gained huge interest because of the many context-aware applications that have emerged lately. These applications are situated in domains such as healthcare, industry & warehousing, agriculture, … The innovations taking place in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT) enable us with new opportunities for indoor positioning. A promising wireless positioning technology is Visible Light Positioning (VLP), whereby LED light signals are being demultiplexed at the receiver, and further processed to deliver an accurate cm-level location estimate.

Important research domains in the context of VLP are:

  • Received signal strength (RSS)-based positioning algorithms in harsh conditions such as a randomly tilted receiver (wearables), or a receiver in dusty environments (industrial or agricultural environment)
  • Positioning hardware and software for Unmodulated VLP, where the LEDs are not being modulated on purpose
  • Signal fusion of VLP signals with Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) data
  • Design and application of post processing filters (e.g., particle filtering) for VLP data

Profile

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates to perform research in the domains above in both national and international European projects. Candidates with a Master degree in Electrical engineering, Computer engineering, and Physics engineering qualify for this research job. Experience in wireless positioning (software and/or hardware) or wireless communications is a strong plus.
